Combat awards of the Armed Forces of Ukraine: how to honourably present the story of your service

You have been through what most people have only seen on the news. Every medal in your drawer — it is not a piece of metal. It is a sleepless night at a position, it is the brother-in-arms you pulled out, it is the decision you made in a split second. And these stories deserve more than a cardboard box in a closet.

We are the Zaytcev Wood workshop. Since 2019 we have been making display cases for military awards. Our founder Oleg is a serviceman himself, who returned to the front in 2022. We are not outside observers — we are part of this story. Hundreds of sets of combat decorations have passed through our hands: from the medals of privates to the award collections of brigade commanders.

This article is a practical guide for those who want to honorably display their combat awards or the awards of a loved one. No fluff — just specifics from people who do this every day.

What can be displayed in a case: the full list

Most people think a display case is a frame for medals. In reality, much more can be displayed. Here is what people most often come to us with:

Orders and medals

The foundation of any military collection. State awards, departmental decorations of the Ministry of Defence, medals from the command — all of this is arranged on a velvet base with individual mounts for each size. We make display cases for awards from the compact A6 format (for 1 medal) to Grand display cases (for full collections with dozens of decorations).

Challenge coins

Challenge coins are a culture of their own. From brothers-in-arms, from commanders, from international partners, from volunteer organizations. Over the course of their service, many soldiers collect 10, 20, and sometimes 50+ challenge coins. Keeping them in a bag is no way to treat them. For challenge coins we make special display cases with individual slots, where every coin is visible and protected.

Chevrons and patches

Chevrons are the chronicle of your service. Every unit, every rotation, every operation. If you have accumulated a collection of chevrons, a wall board is the best way to present them. We make boards from 60×40 cm to 100×80 cm — for any size of collection. There is also a compact Patch Book — a chevron album that is convenient to take with you.

Ceremonial and combat flags

A unit's flag is a sacred object. It cannot simply be folded and put on a shelf. For flags there are special display cases, where the fabric is stretched or neatly draped under glass. For large flags there are Grand Maxi display cases, and for flags folded in the military triangle — a separate design.

Award weapons and knives

An award knife or weapon is a special decoration that requires not only beautiful but also reliable presentation. We make display cases for award knives and display cases for award weapons with reinforced mounts and additional protection.

Combination display cases: all in one

The most popular format among our customers is the combination display case, where medals, challenge coins, an award knife, and the unit's flag are placed side by side. It is a complete picture of one's service in a single frame. For this we make display cases with individual layouts — A3 format or Grand, depending on the number of elements.

It is also worth mentioning the 3-in-1 display albums — a book-style design that combines a display case for awards, an album for photographs, and a place for documents. A compact format that is convenient to store and pass on.

Which display case to choose: formats and sizes

Here is simple navigation through our formats — so you immediately understand what suits you:

A6 and A5 — for a start

A6 (from 900 UAH) — a compact display case for 1 award. Suitable for those who are just beginning to collect decorations, or as a gift.

A5 (from 1,390 UAH) — holds 5 awards. There are options with engraving along the frame (name, unit, dates of service) and with a space for the booklet of the award certificate.

A4 — the golden mean

A4 (from 2,490 UAH) — the most popular format. Holds up to 10 awards. Available options: with engraving, with a shelf for challenge coins, with a flag and engraving, for an award knife.

The A4 format is what most of our military customers start with. It has enough room for the main awards, and there is always the option to order a second display case when the collection grows.

A3 — for serious collections

A3 (from 4,090 UAH) — for those who have 15–25 awards or want to display awards together with challenge coins or a flag. Options: with a shelf for challenge coins, with a flag, with engraving along the frame.

Grand — the maximum format

Grand display cases (from 5,300 UAH) — for full collections, where everything needs to be displayed: medals, orders, challenge coins, a flag, an award knife, photos. Two sizes — 530×390 mm and 680×445 mm. There are options with a flag and photos, for an award knife with engraving in a shield.

The Grand is a display case that you hang in the most prominent place. It is not just storage, it is a statement.

For units: corporate orders

A separate area of our work is orders from units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Here are typical scenarios:

  • Presentation to soldiers upon demobilization or rotation — a commander orders display cases for everyone who received awards. We have made batches of from 5 to 40 display cases at once
  • Commemorative gifts from a unit — a display case engraved with the unit's name, call sign, dates of service. A personal, one-of-a-kind item
  • Furnishing a headquarters or a hall of military glory — large-format display cases with the unit's history, flag, photographs, and awards
  • Gifts for international partners — display cases with Ukrainian symbols and elements that represent the unit

For corporate orders (from 5 units) we offer individual design and flexible terms. Write to us — we will discuss your case.

For the families of the fallen and missing in action

This is the hardest part of our work. And the most important.

Wives, mothers, and children come to us — with a bag of awards there is no longer anyone to wear. Sometimes with certificates that still smell of gunpowder. Sometimes with the single challenge coin that remained from a son.

For us, every such order is not business, but a duty.

We help to:

  • Gather and catalog all the awards
  • Arrange them in the correct order (by status and chronology)
  • Add photos, the unit's flag, personal items
  • Create a display case that will become the center of remembrance in the home

If you are the family of a defender and want to honorably display his awards — get in touch with us. We will guide you through the entire process and help you do everything right.

Engraving: the detail that makes a display case personal

Most of our customers choose a display case with individual engraving. It can be:

  • Name and call sign — so that everyone who sees the display case knows whose story this is
  • Unit name — brigade, battalion, company
  • Dates of service — the period during which the awards were received
  • A motto or quote — words that hold meaning for the owner
  • The unit's emblem — engraving in a shield on the frame of the display case

The engraving is done with a laser on wood — it is precise, durable, and aesthetic. We work with any layouts: from text to complex images.

How to place an order: step by step

The process is simple and does not require coming to us:

  1. Send photos of the awards — via any convenient messenger or the form on the website. This will help us assess the scope and suggest the optimal format
  2. We discuss the details — size, color of the velvet, engraving, additional elements (a shelf for challenge coins, a space for a flag, etc.)
  3. We agree on the layout — we will create a scheme for arranging the awards and send it for approval
  4. Production — up to 5 business days, depending on the complexity
  5. Delivery — by Nova Poshta throughout Ukraine. Details on the delivery and payment page

You can send us the awards for arrangement, or arrange them yourself after receiving the display case — we provide detailed instructions.

How much it costs

We understand that for many service members the budget matters. That is why we keep honest prices without unnecessary markups:

  • From 900 UAH — a compact A6 display case for a few awards
  • From 1,390 UAH — an A5 display case for 5–8 awards
  • From 2,490 UAH — an A4 display case (the most popular format)
  • From 4,090 UAH — an A3 display case for large collections
  • From 5,300 UAH — a Grand display case for a full set
  • From 1,140 UAH — a wall board for chevrons
  • 2,370 UAH — a Patch Book (chevron album)

Engraving, additional shelves, and non-standard elements are discussed individually. Browse the full catalog with all options and prices.

Why it is important to do this now

Awards do not last forever if they are not cared for. Metal oxidizes, ribbons fade, enamel cracks. The longer decorations sit in a bag or box — the more damage they take.

But it is not only about preservation. A display case is a way to tell yourself and your family: what I went through has meaning. This is not vanity — it is respect for your own path. And it is a story that your children and grandchildren will be able to see, touch, and understand.

One of our customers is a company commander who put together a display case with the awards of all the soldiers who fell in his unit. He hung it in his home so that he could see their names every day. It is more than furniture. It is memory that lives.
